Untitled (Producer) / 2024

This project is a response towards the intersection between filmic perspectives and the sociopolitical, economic, and cultural environments in which those perspectives are realized. By manipulating performances and text from realist films - Renoir’s Toni, Rossellini’s Germany Year Zero, Pontecorvo’s The Battle of Algiers, Cassavetes’ Opening Night, May’s Mikey and Nicky, Burnett’s My Brother’s Wedding, and Hui’s Boat People - I sought to reflect on how the realist approach, and reception to that approach, is deeply entangled with the historical and cultural realities of their time, while raising questions about their lingering commodification in the present.
